“From a distance, (his) work could be viewed as a pun on modernist nihilism, but up close, reveals a material sensibility that goes beyond a simple juxtaposition of abstraction and reality.” – Laurie Cluitmans (Director, Galerie Fons Welters)

Benrimon Contemporary is pleased to announce Andreas Blank: Landscape Metaphor, Andreas Blank’s first solo exhibition with the gallery and in the United States. The exhibition features an entirely new body of unique sculptural works.

Andreas Blank’s sculptures transform landscape into stylised images by reflecting various cultural shapes and processes. A closer look offers a precisely staged arrangement of bulbs, boxes and plastic bags as objects of exquisite beauty and elegance. Using a variety of precious stones such as alabaster, limestone, and marble sourced from quarries all over the world, these mundane objects become elevated to monumental status. The sculptures alone act as part of a complete picture and it is within these thoughtful and carefully arranged installations that the true narrative of the objects become apparent. The temporal nature of the objects is replaced by a transcendental permanence. The visible is challenged and transferred into the state of a chronologically displaced structure.

Whether marble, alabaster, or porphyry, material historically used to serve religious or political functions, has in Blank's hands acquired a seemingly casual and fragmentary character. The geographical and cultural identity of the stone and the memorial function of stone-sculpture in general refer to the value of each object. Blank questions the obvious and transforms traditional ideals and values on the ordinary and present.

Born in 1976 in Ansbach, Germany, Blank graduated from the Royal College of Art, London and has studios in Bavaria, London and Berlin. He was a finalist in 2009 for the Saatchi New Sensations prize. He will have his first solo exhibition with the gallery in September 2013.
