Numinous (adj.) describing an experience that makes you fearful yet excited and fascinated, awed yet attracted-the powerful, personal feeling of being overwhelmed and truly inspired.

“Devoting oneself to painting does not simply mean to manipulate color, light, form … it is not either about the mystery of the brushstrokes.” - Andrés Ferrandis

Ruiz-Healy Art is pleased to present Numinous, featuring new works by Andrés Ferrandis. The exhibition will open on February 27, with an artist’s reception 6-8 pm. Ferrandis is known for his evocative abstract paintings redolent with the traces of perception, what the artist calls “footprints left behind.” His new constructions of collage on paper utilize photography, fragments of text, and cut-paper organic and geometric forms that seem to drift and swirl through landscapes of memory.

Born in Valencia, Spain in 1965, Andrés Ferrandis studied at the University of La Laguna and received his Masters of Fine Arts in painting from the University of Seville in 1997. The same year he exhibited at ARCO Madrid, Spain’s most prestigious international contemporary art fair, where his work has appeared many times since.

Ferrandis’ first exhibitions were accompanied by Bancaixa awards from Instituto Valenciano de Arte Moderno and Fundación Bancaja, Valencia, followed by travels in Cuba, New York, and Madrid. A resident of Miami since 2002, he has shared his time between Florida and Costa Rica for much of the past decade. Numinous is Ferrandis’ first solo exhibition at Ruiz-Healy Art.

Varied in their materials, the new collage works also introduce another hybridity: elements are echoed in the compositions that bridge Ferrandis’ painting history with his design practice in furniture and architecture. Neo-baroque flourishes, a bold but highly controlled palette, and pop art tactics of appropriation are also present.

Seeing the pieces in person one is reminded of another era. Ferrandis’ collages are true descendants of the pioneering works by Kurt Schwitters a century ago. This is not just image-play within the picture plane; a tumultuous array of paper lifts above the embracing background in rich bas-relief. One is overwhelmed by the sculptural materiality of the works. So, are these images or objects? The tension between the three-dimensional world and our reception of it through sight is a recurring question throughout this series. That the text snippets reference, among others, the existentialist concerns of Søren Kierkegaard is not an accident.

Ferrandis has exhibited at Miami Art Museum, Instituto Valenciano de Arte Moderno, ARCO Madrid, Art Basel Miami, Art Chicago and other international art fairs and galleries in New York, Santa Fe, Miami, Seville, San José, Costa Rica and Caracas, Venezuela. His work has been featured in numerous international publications, and is held in many prominent private and public collections.

Andrés Ferrandis: Numinous will be on display through March 22nd.
