Among the many professions that have been associated with the running of the National Gallery of Ireland is the artist. The Board of Governors and Guardians of the National Gallery of Ireland was established by an Act of Parliament, passed in to law on 10 August 1854 to provide for the Gallery’s foundation.

The Act defined the structure of the Gallery’s Board, naming the President of the Royal Hibernian Academy as well as two artists nominated by the RHA as members.

Throughout the Gallery’s history, contemporary artists have remained integral members of its Board. Indeed, over fifty practicing artists have served on the Board, overseeing the development of the institution and its collection.

This exhibition highlights the work of artists who were appointed to the Board of Governors and Guardians of the National Gallery of Ireland, and who have contributed to the collection, such as George Petrie, John Lavery, Nathaniel Hone, Sarah Purser, Jack B. Yeats, Evie Hone, and Seán Keating.

The exhibition is accompanied by a free brochure.
