Spanierman Modern is pleased to announce the opening on December 12, 2013 of Jasmina Danowski: My Marbles, an exhibition of new works in oil, ink and gesso on paper, including highlights of some of the artist’s latest explorations. The show’s title is derived from a dream, and the large-scale paintings, with their free-roaming forms, draw us into vivid worlds of opulence, buoyancy, and luminosity. Uniting an Impressionist delight in the passing world with the expansiveness of Abstract Expressionism, the irreverent humor of vaudeville, bits of conversation overheard in passing, and a sense of awe at nature’s beauty, the works evoke experiences that are recognizable yet indefinable. “I was musing on thoughts of warm and cool light and moonlight, but I can’t put my finger on it,” Danowski states. As the critic John Yau has recently observed: “The artist has pulled off the unlikely possibility of infusing nature abstraction with a celebratory vision that edges up against the primordial. Everything is in a state of formation and deformation.”

Working in the tradition of process art, Danowski makes her own inks and paints on the floor. Rigorously self-critical, she examines the properties of her mediums as she paints and lets her actions and their consequences determine a work’s outcome. Expressing freedom and risk-taking in her uninhibited mark-making, Danowski joins her art to a venerable tradition in the history of art. At the same time, her over-large aqueous and floral shapes elicit a teasing self-parody that encourages pure enjoyment and release.

Danowski was born in Stuttgart, Germany, and received her B.F.A. from the San Francisco Art Institute (1990), and her M.F.A. from Bard College, Annandale-on-Hudson, New York (1997). She received two Pollock-Krasner awards (2001 and 2005) and has shown her work at Boston Center for the Arts; Dumbo Arts Center Festival, Brooklyn; Massachusetts College of Art, Boston; Mississippi Museum of Art, Jackson; Simon's Rock College, Great Barrington, Massachusetts; Spanierman Modern, New York; Westfield State Downtown Art Gallery, Massachusetts; and Weatherspoon Art Museum, Greensboro, North Carolina. Her work is in the collections of the Mississippi Museum of Art, Jackson, and Westfield State University, Massachusetts.
