Beck & Eggeling show a selection of nude photographs by the French artist Lucien Clergue (born 1934), that were created in the period from the 1950s until now, in their gallery premises at Bilker Strasse 5 in Duesseldorf. The exhibition will be on display from September 6 through October 26. On Thursday, September 19, starting from 6 pm, the artist will be present to sign his works.

Lucien Clergue is well known for his friendship with Pablo Picasso and his cooperation with Jean Cocteau. As co-founder of one of the most important international festivals of photography, the "Rencontres Internationales de la Photographie" in his hometown Arles, Clergue has gained merits in promoting photography as an art in France.

In 2003, Clergue was named „grandmaster of nude photography“ by a journalist of the newspaper „Die Welt“. Nude portraits are of special importance in Clergue's oeuvre, as he has been photographing nudes in hia own distinctive style since the 1950s, and so he still does today. His „zebra nudes“, in which he experiments with the effects of stroboscopes, are arguably just as famous as the early pieces „Nu de la mer“, in which nude female bodies are surrounded by waves like rocks in the sea.

Lucien Clergue became a knight of the Légion d'honneur in 2003, and he was the first photographer chosen to be a member of the French Académie des Beaux-Arts in 2007. For 2013, he is the president of the Académie. In 1979, he finished his doctorate in photography at the University of Marseille.

His works are collected in important museums and institutions around the globe, among others the Museum of Modern Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; the Art Institute of Chicago; the Bibliothèque Nationale in Paris, the Centre Pompidou and the Picasso Museum in Paris; the Museum fuer Gestaltung, Zurich; the Musée de l’Elysée, Lausanne; the Folkwang Museum, Essen; the Ludwig Museum in Cologne and the Israel Museum, Jerusalem.
