Walter Wickiser Gallery is pleased to announce the exhibition of Pamela Sztybel, Flowers, from April 3rd to May 10th, 2014.

Born and raised in New York, Pamela Sztybel studied at the New School for Social Research, under Wolf Kahn and pursued M.F.A. from the New York Academy of Art. Sztybel received fellowships to work at the Santa Fe Art Institute and the Vermont Studio Center. She currently holds a position as a trustee of the Vermont Studio Center. She was a visiting artist and as a teacher at the Scuola Internazionale di Grafica in Venice, Italy, and the West Liberty State Collge in West Virginia, as well as the Long Beach Island Foundtion for the Arts in New Jersey.

“There’s a photograph of Matisse at his work table in Nice, pen in hand, surrounded by plants and flowers. It occurred to me that this was how I really wanted to spend my own time in the studio now, surrounded by flowers, with music, perhaps a dog at my feet, and occasionally the news of the day for added company. The flowers have everything I need as cooperative subjects: gesture, line, color, and an infinite variety of form. Emblems of beauty and the brevity of life, they can change quickly, and different stages of their life can be found in one or two sessions. These works are not meant to be botanically correct, nor are they imaginary-a dropped petal or the addition of a leaf is always possible. My landscape work in oils is generally tonal-the real subject is light and dark, and what’s to be seen at a glance. These new works are slow and contemplative, quietly and carefully observed, and constructed, by hand, in full color.” - Pamela Sztybel
