Curwen Gallery are proud to be showing our first solo exhibition of work by painter and printmaker Rachel Clark. We first saw Rachel Clark’s work when selecting artists for our regular exhibition of MA Printmaking Graduates from London, ‘Hot Off The Press’ in 2010. Since then we have followed her work with great interest. This solo exhibition allows us to see more fully the scope of her abstract work, as alongside her etchings, some of her paintings in oil will also be on display.

Rachel Clark has established a reputation as an abstract artist, a portrait painter and printmaker. Her work has been selected for exhibitions such as the prestigious John Moore's and Pacesetters exhibitions, and the National Portrait Gallery's BP Portrait Awards. She won the Printmaker's Council Student Award in 2009 and was also selected for the 2009 Clifford Chance Award Exhibition. She was Artist in Residence at the London Metropolitan University from 2010-2012 and has work in public and many private collections.

Rachel Clark produces her paintings in series. ‘Transitions’ is the latest of these in which she reflects on the challenge and poetry of moving through life. Language and text which have contemporary and personal significance often inspire her abstract images. The striking use of colour is at the heart of all her work where she explores the mystery of human experience through the formal language of paint and print.

She says, ‘In this concrete, material world of the routine and familiar there is also available to us the limitless inner world of imagination and senses, an unknown world, never seen but strangely familiar, It is a rich, constantly available source where the mind explores freely and slips fluidly between what is known and what is unknowable. It is as real and as potent as anything you can touch and has as much to do with our experience of what it is to be human as what is instantly and obviously recognisable’.

After graduating from West Surrey College of Art and Design Rachel Clark continued working as a painter whilst running her life painting and drawing school in London. She completed her MA in Printmaking at Camberwell College of Arts in 2009.
