The sixth annual RSA New Contemporaries exhibition will take place at the Royal Scottish Academy Galleries in Edinburgh from 15 February to 12 March 2014. Showcasing 63 graduates selected from the degree shows in 2013; this carefully curated exhibition offers a unique opportunity to see the best of Scotland’s emerging talent under one roof.

2014 is a special year for RSA New Contemporaries as it will see the presentation of the first ever Fleming-Wyfold Bursary, sponsored by the Fleming-Wyfold Foundation, supporters of the Fleming Collection in Mayfair, London. Chosen from the exhibition presentations, the recipient of this major award will receive a bursary of £10,000 plus an additional £4000 towards project production costs. A critical aspect of this award is a mentoring scheme that will see Susanna Beaumont, curator, work with the winning artist for a year, offering guidance and support on the best use of the award to further their career.

“This critical support of young artists is a core objective and value of the Foundation. Building on the strength and enduring legacy of the Fleming Collection, we hope to develop new and existing relationships, from education to exhibitions that will underpin our role as a key promoter and supporter of Scottish art and culture, and fulfill our ambition to be seen as a hallmark of excellence in Scottish visual arts.” Rory Fleming, trustee and chairman of Fleming-Wyfold Foundation Management Committee.

Additionally, the Foundation will support a newly developed exhibition of works by artists selected from RSA New Contemporaries, to be held at the Fleming Collection in London. This new exhibition is titled “New Scottish Artists: a Royal Scottish Academy exhibition supported by the Fleming-Wyfold Foundation” from 24 March to 31 May 2014 and will become an annual event to showcase RSA New Contemporaries artists in London.

The selection was made by Alan Robb RSA, exhibition convenor, with assistance from fellow academicians and representatives from the five main colleges of art (listed below). This year the six schools of architecture in Scotland have put forward candidates to work with architecture convenor Charlie Sutherland RSA (Elect). The graduates are given the opportunity to launch their career at the prestigious RSA galleries by exhibiting a substantial body of new work; including painting, sculpture, film making, photography, printmaking, architecture and installation.

“In 2013 the overall quality of Degree Shows was impressive, continuing evidence of the high standards maintained by our art schools and colleges. This exhibition will be a marvellous art feast with lots of thought provoking ideas, images and objects. Visitors cannot fail to be impressed by the visual intelligence of the artists we have selected, the dazzling variety and resolution of individual works.” Alan Robb RSA, Exhibition Convenor

RSA New Contemporaries represents the RSA’s commitment to supporting and presenting the best contemporary work in Scotland. The RSA team works closely with the artists and architects towards developing a lasting relationship in the lead up to the exhibition and beyond. With over £25,000 worth of monetary prizes in addition to residency, studio and purchase prizes, the development of this exhibition is an important initiative for emerging artists in Scotland, enabling a ‘first exhibition’ opportunity for some 50+ emergent artists annually. The RSA are delighted to announce that Walter Scott will be Exhibition Patron and, for the sixth consecutive year, The Skinny will be our Media Partner.

“The RSA is to be commended for providing recent graduates with the opportunity to show their work in such a high-profile venue at the start of their careers.” Jim Birrell, Head of Painting & Printmaking, Glasgow School of Art.
