One of the great pleasures of Simon Laurie’s paintings is their capability of being appreciated at several levels. On first encounter they appear light hearted and joyous, both in their vibrant palette and choice of everyday items placed in jaunty juxtaposition. As with many painters of similar stature the rich decorative quality of each work belies a greater complexity.

Simon is a very serious painter and his current approach is the culmination of several decades at his craft. Originally an abstract constructionist he produced monochromatic three dimensional works before developing a more colourful series of found object boxed sculptures in the 1980s and 1990s.

A decade or so ago he returned to the flat surface, to paint and collage, to refine the ideas he had explored to the full in the constructions. These paintings are the culmination of that distillation process, the reduction of reality to simple form and colour.

Simon Laurie is a contemporary Scottish landscape and still life artist whose paintings are characterised by references to Scottish life and society incorpor ating fish, drink, religious symbols and buildings. These objects are arranged upon a rich textural ground created by the application of multiple layers of acrylic paint. Laurie’s two dimensional construc tions combine tradition with technique to form his own fundamental visual language.

Laurie studied at Glasgow School of Art from 1982 to 1988. He was elected as a member of The Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolours (RSW) in 1991 and a member of the Royal Glasgow Insti tute (RGI) in 2000. He has won many major awards including the Teachers Whisky Travel Award, RGI and the Alexander Graham Munro Award, RSW.
