Cadogan Contemporary art gallery is pleased to present a solo exhibition of work by Greek painter Sofia Petropoulou. Having been selected for many group exhibitions in her native Greece and abroad, to now have a solo show in a London gallery on this scale is an important prospect for one of the gallery’s finest abstract contemporary painters.

Cadogan Contemporary is a truly independent art gallery. English in sensibility, yet with an international appeal, the gallery has been trading successfully for over 30 years in the heart of Chelsea, in London.

With an esteemed international client base and having recently cultivated close relationships with some of London’s most high-profile interior designers, this independent gallery grows stronger, finding new ways to develop in the ever-changing market whilst retaining its quirky sophistication. Director Christopher Burness’ years in the business have given him invaluable experience when looking for new talent, and over the past few years some exceptional artists have joined the gallery, of which Sofia Petropoulou is undoubtedly one of the finest.

In Sofia’s work dominated by abstract pieces, the formal aspects of art - colour, line and composition - take precedence over the object of representation. Drawing from both the natural elements and the urban landscapes, Petropoulou does not escape from real sources, yet allows colour and gesture to dictate composition. This dynamic solo exhibition, featur-ing vivid, large-scale canvases demonstrates her spontaneity and improvisational technique, the works seemingly alive with the gestural application of paint.

Cadogan Contemporary is a distinguished gallery amongst London’s cultural society, and the exhibition dates of Sofia’s work have been chosen to coincide with the Greek National Holiday on Monday 28th October 2013, opening with a Pri-vate View event on the evening of Friday 25th October. As the 6th annual London Greek Film Festival takes place the week prior to the exhibition, it will really be a time for the celebration of Greek culture in the UK capital.

With the spotlight very much on Greek Contemporary art this Autumn, as the country is set to stage the upcoming 4th Thessaloniki Biennial in September 2013, it is wonderful for such a distinguished artist as Sofia to have a solo show in a revered London gallery with an international reputation. Cadogan Contemporary are extremely proud to be playing a part in further endorsing the international profile of Greek contemporary art with this outstanding exhibition.
