Tina Gverović and Siniša Ilić

Tate Modern continues its series of international collaborations with an exhibition opening on 21 November of the work of Tina Gverović and Siniša Ilić, curated in partnership with the Museum of Contemporary Art, Belgrade. Invited to undertake a two week residency at Tate Modern, these artists will produce a series of new paintings and an immersive site-specific installation conceived specifically for the Project Space. Responding to the museum building, its collection and its public, this project will address the parallels between Tate Modern and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Belgrade as well as the larger international themes that connect them within a global context.

Gverović and Ilić have been engaged in a collaborative partnership since 2006, creating works that deal with states of tension, uneasiness, fragility and confusion. They have collaborated together on a number of artist books and exhibitions, including recent shows at Fordham Gallery, London, Nadežda Petrović Memorial, Čačak and Gallery Nova, Zagreb. Their multimedia installations focus on the gallery space and the context in which the work is shown as well as the visitors’ interpretation of it. Their work in this exhibition will address the nature of the residency as a creative process and the way in which its spatial and temporal limits define artistic practice.

Based between Dubrovnik and London, Tina Gverović works with installation, drawing, painting, sound and video. Her work often takes the form of immersive and disorientating installations that question understandings of space, territory and identity and the ways in which these are bound to invention and imagination. She has recently exhibited at the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Rijeka; Busan Biennale, South Korea; and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Zagreb.

Siniša Ilić’s work addresses social phenomena and mechanisms, exploring forms of labour, tension and social violence through drawing, painting and installation. Ilić has collaborated with artists, authors, and performers on a range of projects, and has recently exhibited at Calvert 22, London; Metelkova Museum of Contemporary Arts, Ljubljana; and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Belgrade.

This exhibition is curated by Hannah Dewar at Tate Modern and Una Popović from the Museum of Contemporary Art, Belgrade.
