Tom Hoar has created an explosive new collection of paintings inspired by the Circus. Increasingly well-known for his equestrian paintings, the exhibition is the culmination of two years’ work by this young, emerging British artist and launches a new chapter exploring the atmosphere, drama and excitement of the Circus.

Over the last two summers, Tom Hoar has been working closely with Giffords Circus; spending time behind the scenes, experiencing circus life with the performers and characters at the heart of the show.

Working on site and back at in his studio near Shaftsbury in Wiltshire, this new collection of drawings, pastels and oils explores a way of life that is unchanged, a circus troupe travelling from place to place, offering a temporary escapism away from everyday life into a world of colour, music, mystery and entertainment.

As Tom Hoar explains it is ‘the pull of another dimension beyond the boundaries of everyday existence that we’re drawn to. We all have an inherent need for new experiences and to be freed from our inhibitions. Out of this shared experience comes a common human understanding.’

Equally it is the hard-craft behind the scenes that resonates on an artistic and personal level. ‘They are serious professionals and I feel a great sense of respect for the individual and collective achievement that is put into every performance. It is a world of hard-graft, training, practising, grit and elbow grease. Similarly an artwork, like the performance itself, is the product of individual dedication, commitment and an emotional investment, played out in the studio away from the public eye, to elicit a personal response from the viewer.’

Tom Hoar’s Circus exhibition will be on show from 22nd October – 2nd November 2013. It will be hosted by GrandyArt at a pop-up gallery space in Central London, much like the circus itself arriving in town, placing the collection in the context of an all encompassing, explosive celebration of the Circus.

Born in 1978, Tom Hoar is rapidly making a name for himself as a refreshingly talented, up and coming young British artist. He has attended life drawing classes at the Royal Academy and exhibited with the Royal Society of British Portrait Painters, the Royal Institute of British Artists and the Royal Watercolour Society. Son of an artist and grandson of an architect, Tom has an artistic flair, striking ability and natural talent
unconstrained by formal training. In April 2012 he exhibited with The Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment, following a 12 month association accompanying the Regiment on their daily routine at Hyde Park Barracks and official ceremonial duties including the wedding of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge in April 2011.
