True Colours, a trans-historical celebration of extraordinary colour photography, will open at Atlas Gallery, London, in autumn. The exhibition, running from September 5th – October 5th 2013, will feature colour works by photographers represented by the gallery who have pushed the boundaries of the medium, from early colour work by the likes of René Burri and Ernst Hass, to more contemporary applications by Adam Jeppesen and Paolo Ventura. Other photographers in the exhibition include Jonas Bendiksen, Martin Parr, Norman Parkinson, Steve Macleod and Steve McCurry.

An exclusive work by René Burri will form a key focus of the exhibition; the large limited edition piece Horse Pool and House by Luis Barragan, San Cristobal, Mexico (1976) is a unique example of Burri’s colour work within a largely black and white oeuvre. The re-discovery of Burri’s colour photographs has been highlighted in his recently published book Impossible Reminiscences – this and the work itself are available for purchase through the Atlas Gallery.

Burri’s work will be placed alongside pieces by contemporary photographers such as Adam Jeppesen whose colour work from the Flatlands Camp Project sees its UK debut at the exhibition. Travelling the length of the Americas unaccompanied, this project was a year and a half in the making and explores the mental and physical effect the epic trip had on the photographer, and his relationship to the surrounding environment. Jeppesen has been nominated for both the Deutsche Börse Photography Prize and the KLM Paul Huf award and has a wealth of international exhibitions behind him.

True Colours will also feature the work of Steve McCurry whose Afghan Girl at Nasir Bagh refugee camp, Peshawar, Pakistan, 1984 will be on show. Afghan Girl is representative of McCurry’s many trips to India and Pakistan. During the Russian invasion of Afghanistan McCurry crossed the Pakistan border into rebel controlled Afghanistan and took some of the world’s first images of the conflict.

Also on display will be photographs by Paolo Ventura whose whimsical depictions of the life of a circus clown; Winter Stories #54, (The Balloon Seller), 2009, add a lighter dimension to the exhibition. Ventura’s debut UK solo exhibition – The Infinite City - will follow at the Atlas Gallery later this autumn.
